C-path successfully validated Warthin-Starry stain (WS)

Which is a silver-based histological special stain used to visualize Lawsonia intracellularis (L. intracellularis) and other microorganisms such as Spirochetes sp., Brachyspira sp., Helicobacter sp. and other argyrophilic (silver-stained) bacteria in histologic sections. WS is of particular importance to visualise L. intracellularis and correlate their presence to the hyperplastic lesions in swine intestines as this bacteria can not be detected with routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) histologic stain. WS stain provides same level of specificity and sensitivity for detecting L. intracellularis as immunohistochemistry (IHC) does, however, WS is significantly cheaper and less technically challenging than IHC.

C-path is currently developing

Other special stains for microorganisms such as Gram stain that visualise gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In addition, we are also planning to introduce IHC toolbox for important viral and non-viral infectious diseases of swine, Bovine, companion animals, and poultry.
